I started praying for my husband when we had just broken up, six weeks after we found out I was pregnant.
That day, I learned that I was not the main chic. We had been dating for only three months when I got pregnant, and so I was sure that God didn’t want anything to do with me.
Despite my guilt, anger and heartbreak, I went honestly to the Lord and pleaded my case. I had never prayed this much before.
When my husband (then boyfriend) called me three days later and told me how much he wanted to protect me and our unborn baby, I realised the power of intentional prayer.
How to Start praying for your husband when you don’t know what to pray for:
But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you
John 14:26
- You can start praying this minute, by asking the Holy Spirit to show you how to pray for your husband. I do this whenever I want to pray but don’t know what to say. One of the things I learned during the three days of deep prayer, is to rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The best prayer strategy for your marriage is to invite the Holy Spirit to guide your prayers.
- Research prayer points. I love reading marriage books, to help me identify our needs as a couple. As I read, I pick the topics that relate to me and write them in my reading journal. Then I can use them as my future prayer points. This method has helped me learn much about our needs as husband and wife.
- Another helpful way to learn how to pray for your marriage, is to read devotional or prayer books for marriage. For example, ‘The Power of a Praying Wife’ by Stormie Omartian. I have said so many times, how this book taught me how to pray for my husband and I think it’s one of the most powerful books you can ever read on marriage.
- You can also learn to pray for your marriage through praying scripture over your husband. For example, pick a scripture like Psalms 90-17 May the favour of our God rest on my husband and establish the work of his hands for him, yes establish the work of his hands.
How to pray for specific needs in your marriage
One of the main reasons, love diminishes after marriage is because couples stop taking care of each other like they used to.
Understandably so, children come and take up most of your energy. Your husband probably has to work double the time to meet your needs.
Despite all the changes, you still need to fulfil each other as a husband and wife like you used to.
That is why you need to pray, that God
- Helps you to put Him first in your marriage all your days
- Helps you identify any weaknesses in your marriage
- Gives you the discipline to meet each other’s needs and fulfil each other and lastly
- Remove anyone or anything that can come between you two as a couple
Now that you know how to come up with prayer points. Let me share with you how I would go about creating scripture prayers over my marriage.
Ps you will feel a shift in your marriage when you start praying for your mariage intentionally.
